illustrated goodness for kids and the young at heart

About

Croeso - I’m so happy you’re here! My name is Rhi (rhymes with bee / tea / sea) which is short for Rhiannon, like the Fleetwood Mac song …but I probably haven’t been called by my full name since I was a child drawing animals all over my bedroom walls.

I’m a professional illustrator based in Leeds, England, but my heart is in Anglesey, Wales where I grew up with stories of Welsh folklore, myth and magic.

I have a passion for character design, creating concepts, storytelling, and visual communication theory. As an empathic visual learner, I strive for illustration excellence to provide value in all I set my mind to in my work to promote a love of art and creativity in a fun and motivating way.

You can say hi and direct any illustration enquiries to: hello@rhitown.com

I’m particularly interested in any projects to do with: bumblebees, climate change, dogs, friendship, horses, kindness, LGBTQ+, myth and folklore, mushrooms, nature, neurodiversity, women empowerment, Wales and Welsh culture.

I honed my skills in art and design at Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern and Coleg Menai before going on to study illustration at Hereford College of Arts and work as a bookseller at Waterstones where I specialised in children’s books and fell in love with picture books.

More recently I have completed my MA in Narrative Illustration at the University of Gloucestershire, where I developed a special interest in childlike wonder, creating meaningful work through empathy and the special relationship between pictures and words.

The King with Dirty Feet (2018) is my first published book, written by Sally Pomme Clayton, published by Otter-Barry Books and Winner of the Best Picture Book category in Oxfordshire 2019.

I have since collaborated with One Third Stories on their brilliant subscription box initiative to deliver language learning books and activities for kids with the book nine story and accompanying activity book, Ada Bell the Curious Explorer written by Anna Roberts; Pop Up & Play Co on various activity sheets; Yorkshire Tea on creating a “tea band” for their website and birthday cards to send to their members.
